You probably know TOMS for their shoes and their philanthropic mission of giving shoes to children in need. I know I have a few pairs in my closet. But, what you probably didn't know is that their goal has grown globally and they intend to expand through coffee.
I recently read about TOMS Roasting Co. in a coffee trade magazine I get at the office. It was by complete coincidence that I passed it on way to my cousin's place out in California.
Blake Mycoskie, TOMS founder and entrepreneur, hired Angel Orozco to lead the roasting operation. TOMS Roasting Company will follow the shoe business's "One for One" approach. For each bag of coffee sold, TOMS will provide one week of clean water to a person in need.
TOMS is working with Water for People in five of the countries from which it sources its coffee, including Guatemala, Honduras, Rwanda, Mulawi and Peru.
They are offering direct-from-source, single-origin coffees.
I ordered the Fresh Pressed Nut Milk Cortado. The nut milk was absolutely to-die for delicious,
Rachel Halliburton, who helped lead the marketing for the coffee project, told CNN: “I’m intimidated to walk into Intelligentsia. We want you to feel okay about walking in and saying, ‘I just want a cup of coffee, and yes, I’m going to put sugar in it.’”
TOMS has plans to open in NYC sometime in the very near future. They were scheduled to open in late Spring sometime, but I'm not sure about the location.
