I knew I wanted to eat at Cranky's Cafe for French Louisiana Cuisine after I read Fresh French Beignets Made In House with your choice of Apple, Strawberry or Nutella on the menu.
Little touches of Mardi Gras all over the room. You'll find colorful beads hanging from the chandelier and other light fixtures. They also have beautiful artwork done by local artists displayed on the walls throughout the entire restaurant including the large mural behind the bar. They have an "Eating Theatre" with live actors and Creole food twice a week. You need to make reservations for that. It includes two short comedies put on by a professional acting troupe who transform the restaurant into a stage for the night.
Croque Madame ham and gruyere cheese on country bread coated with bechamel sauce topped with one sunnyside egg and pomme frites on the side
Roasted Beet Salad baby spinach, herb goat cheese, roasted beets, & caramelized walnuts served with a homemade herb balsamic dressing
They didn't have any beignets when we went. They were apparently having problems with their beignets that day. I was so disappointed, but I understand that these things happen. Service was otherwise excellent.
Luckily, not too far away is one of my favorite tea and coffee hangouts- Communitea. So, we went there for dessert and coffee.
They have an amazing selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, and sweets. I love stopping in after a nice long bike ride in the summer or a long walk in the winter. The staff are super friendly and very knowledgeable about tea and coffee. The only con is that it's cash only so make sure you have a place to stash your money if you're biking there. They also have free wi-fi if you have time to kick back and just enjoy the laid back environment.
Till we brunch again!
